Rat Description and Identification
Members of the rodent family that are generally larger than mice, their bodies between six and ten inches long, depending on the type of rat. Sometimes, in extreme cases, a rat may weigh up to a pound. Rats are amazing climbers and their colors range anywhere from brown to black to white. While they have poor vision and are color-blind, they have adapted and they will often move their heads from side to side to add “motion” so they can see better. Additionally, rats’ other senses, particularly their hearing, are sharp. Norway rats, pack rats and roof rats are some of the most common rat pests in the United States.
Across the United States, there are several species of rats that thrive in many environments. For example, roof rats are mainly found in coastal areas, but Norway rats that are fairly widespread throughout the states. In rural or urban areas rats flourish because of crops garbage.
Whether it is on a farm, in open fields, in wooded areas or in open lots, rats are provided with the resources they need for excellent homes. Since they are so adaptable, they can build nests in underground burrows or at ground level. They line their nests with cloth, paper, or in the case of the pack rat, shiny metal objects like bottle caps or aluminum foil.
Given the opportunity, rats will make their homes in human territory, and once they know where to hunt for food, they are difficult to discourage from staying. Rats enter foundation openings to get to attics, wall cavities and crawl spaces. When they cannot find an opening, they will create one themselves. When they are ready to have their young, rats are especially driven to find shelter for nesting, and will tuck their babies in storage areas, in attic insulation and even between floors to keep them safe and warm.
Diet and Feeding Tendencies
Since rats are omnivorous, they will eat just about anything, a reason they are so adaptable. There are some rats that seek out meat over other foods, and others prefer grains, fruits and vegetable matter. REgardless of what they prefer, rats survive in nearly any environment, and are known to eat birds, fish and smaller rodents as snacks.
When they live in cities near humans, rats thrive because of garbage and waste, and are attracted to areas with easily accessed dumpsters and garbage cans. Land fills, garbage dumps and unkempt yards are particularly appealing.
Damage Possibilities
Rats are notorious for both consuming and contaminating food storage and animal feed. They damage crops, containers and packaging materials. They cause major structural damage when they burrow and chew, which undermines building foundations and slabs. Rats gnaw on electrical wires and water pipes, chew openings through doors, walls, window sills, floors and ceilings. Considerable damage to insulated structures can occur as a result of rat burrowing and nesting in walls and attics.
Rats can transmit several diseases to humans or livestock like leptospirosis, trichinosis, salmonella, rat bite fever and the plague.
