Sitting quietly at my desk and suddenly something runs over my foot. I was on a phone call and it was all I could do to not hang up on the customer and go screaming into the night.
Hanging up as quickly as I could, I told myself: You’re a man. Go down there and see if you can find out what it was.
Pushing back my chair, I clamored to my hands and knees and peered around in the dark cable-choked underbelly of my desk. I didn’t see anything alive and scurrying, but I did notice─how in that tangle, I don’t know─a frayed green cable.
You’ve got to be kidding me, I thought. Rats? In my business office?
It being a fairly large office building I decided to do a little investigating. No one else seemed to notice anything but on the way out that night I happened to run into the cleaning guy. We talked for a bit and he agreed, that yes, there was something going on, something that he was more aware of than any of us since most of the scurrying activity started late at night after we were all gone.
Taking it up the next day with the building owners we called in the professionals.
It didn’t take long to blow all of our minds.
Rats. Crazy amounts of rats.
Apparently they’d made their own little Rat Universe down there. Since our business is built, like most in a city, on top of old buildings, waterways, sewers, etc...we found out that ours was not an isolated or special case. Usually the rats are happy to stay in the depths, but ours was not the only building into which they’d recently decided to surface.
No more snacking in the conference room, I thought, but was told that wasn’t exactly the cause of the rise in rodent activity.
The team of professionals from bird and animal control took over and as they resolved our problem we all learned a great deal in Rat psychology.
Recent weather conditions were one factor. That our building was getting older and small holes were becoming bigger holes (not that a rat needs a hole much bigger than a quarter to squeeze through), wasn’t helping. Sure, carpet crumbs in the conference weren’t exactly a deterrent, but they certainly weren’t the cause. This was a battle humans have been fighting since civilization began and we were more than happy to let those who understood how and what to do come in and save our building, lunches and especially vital computer parts and internet connections before our business itself was hurt.
